As it was expected, Polish national team has easily beaten amateurs of Gibraltar 7:0. With Bayern Munchen’s striker Robert Lewandowski scoring four times.

It’s is not widely known in Europe, but Gibraltar has an important place in Polish history. It was there, during II World War in June 1943, when one of leading Polish generals Wladyslaw Sikorski was killed in a plane crash. Although the causes of the crush are often in doubt, that event has taken a major influence on Polish war times and further history.

This time not in Gibraltar, but in Portuguese Faro, Poland and Gibraltar met for a historical game for some fans. It was first official European competition for the new football national team on European map. That is why most viewers didn’t know, what to expect of the amateurs from Gibraltar.

Poland was off to a good start. Just after few minutes, the difference in class was clearly visible. The goals to come, where just a matter of time. The first crucial goal came in 12th minute from winger Kamil Grosicki. Stade Rennais player took a shot from outside the box and the ball landed just inside the post of Jordan Perez’s goal.

The quick goal was the key, as Adam Nawalka’s team went on to next strikes. However, the efforts in first half were unsuccessful. Poland was dominating the game, but it seemed, that when they got close to the goal, they lacked the final touch and maybe underestimated the opponent.

The second half of the game has started similar to the first one. Just after two minutes Kamil Grosicki scored once again. These were his first goals for national team. – I am hoping for even better games in the future. With all the respect for Gibraltar, but they are a weak team. I don’t get over excited – said Grosicki to newspaper “Przeglad Sportowy”.

Poland were quicker, more accurate and much more determined in the second half. With the time, the psychical advantage of Polish players played an important role. Gibraltar wasn’t a threat to Polish goal at all. As the goalkeeper, Wojciech Szczesny had an easy game. When his team mates up front, especially with Robert Lewandowski destroyed Gibraltar’s defence in second half. Former Borussia Dortmund striker scored four times in 48th, 54th., 86th, 90th minute. Now the current captain of Polish team has 23 goals scored in the national shirt.

Just like Grosicki, Lukasz Szukala also scored his first goal for national team. The Steaua Bucharest central defender hit with the header in 58th minute.

- We realize, that we didn’t play a perfect game, but we did our job. In the second half everything was just as it should be. After the first goal, we played a little slower, but you have to remember, that Gibraltar players were strong at the begging, which made them able to defend better – said Lewandowski after the game. The only bad side of the game are two unnecessary yellow cards. Serie A, Torino’s defender Kamil Glik and Mateusz Klich from German Wolfsburg received yellow cards in the first half of the game Faro.

It’s always good to win by seven goals. So Poland has accomplished a good start to Euro 2016 qualifiers. But here in Warsaw everyone realizes, that it was just a win over an amateur team. The serious games against Germany, Scotland, Ireland or even Georgia are still to come and will show the real potential of this team.

The next one is scheduled at 10th of October against Germany in Warsaw.
