Austria: The Top 3 Players of Round 7

The final weekend before the international break saw a turning of the tide. The previously undefeated Red Bull Salzburg and Wolfsberger AC, were both brought back down to Earth with a bang, as the joint league leaders suffered home defeats to SK Sturm Graz and SC Wiener Neustadt, respectively. What lives long in the memory of this weekend was the quality of the goals scored. Louis Ngwat-Mahop, of SC Rheindorf Altach, struck a beautiful volley in the dying embers of the game against SV Ried to secure a draw. Not to be outdone, Thomas Schrammel, of Rapid Vienna, also smashed home an unstoppable volley, this time against SV Grödig. Kevin Kampl, despite being on the losing side (a rare occurrence), also scored a cultured, curling effort from outside of the box past Benedict Pliquett. Here are the full round-up of scores:

#1 Thomas Schrammel - Having been knocked out in midweek by HJK Helsinki in the Europa League playoff, Schrammel & co. knew the importance of the final league game before the international break. In a much changed side, Zoran Barišić deployed Schrammel down the right-hand flank, an unfamiliar position for the 27-year old. However, the combination of Schrammel and Louis Schaub down the right and Philipp Schobesberger down the left proved to be a winning formula. The wing-back, a 2011 signing from SV Ried, scored the opener with a perfectly executed, first-time volley from the edge of the box, giving Cican Stankovic no chance. Throughout the game, the wing-back was a threat on the overlap, and the team were finally rewarded when he picked out captain Steffen Hofmann to double Rapid's lead. It was a much needed win and it was one of which Schrammel was at the heart of.

 #2 Marko Stankovic - After a slow start to the season for both Sturm and Stankovic, the team finally
clicked against a deflated Red Bull Salzburg. Stankovic, who had already made 61 Bundesliga appearances for Sturm prior to this season, returned as a Summer signing from Austria Vienna. The attacking midfielder, who has been deployed mostly on the wings this season, was given a chance in his favoured No.10 role, and did not disappoint. It was an electric start by the Graz outfit as they were 2 goals up after 14 minutes, courtesy of Stankovic. The first goal was a crisp, whipped shot that seemed to take goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi by surprise as it looped over his head and into the back of the net. The attacking midfielder then grabbed his second goal with a lovely side-footed finish, after a pin-point ball by new signing Thorsten Schick, past the Hungarian goalkeeper and into the corner of the net. The away side spent the majority of the game on the back-foot, with Stankovic occasionally threatening on the counter, but they eventually got the 3 points. In total, Stankovic had a 66% success rate in this game with his shooting boots, and if Darko Milanič keeps faith in using him just behind Djuricin, then we could see Sturm rise rapidly up the table.
#3 Marco Djuricin - Djuricin, one of my favourite and most talented strikers in the Tipico Bundesliga came up with the goods when it mattered, as it was his goal that secured a memorable 3-2 away victory over Red Bull Salzburg. The tireless striker, who subsequently scored for the Austrian U21 side in a 2-0 victory against Boznia-Herzegovina this week, was a constant thorn in the side of the Bulls defence. Djuricin set up the first goal with a mazy run, before nut-megging André Ramalho and laying the ball off to Marko Stankovic. The 21-year old who could have had a hattrick in this game if it wasn't for questionable offside calls, was full of confidence and nearly scored from a shot just inside the Salzburg half. However, with Salzburg having pegged back Sturm to 2-2 and time running out, Marc Andre Schmerböck broke away down the left-hand side and found a free Marco Djuricin to slide the ball past Gulási. It was Djuricin's 5th league goal of the season and it secured a vital 3 points for the struggling Sturm side.
